Mountains are creations of nature and nature is the creation of a greater, incomprehensible power. The incredibility of creation occupied mankind far more in ancient and medieval times than it does today. The formation of the mountain, the thunderstorms which swept over it, its flora and fauna: all could only be explained as being the product of a supernatural power which had mankind totally at its mercy.
